Houston Rockets Draft Prospects: Terrence Ross - SB Nation

A 2-guard to take playing time from Kevin Martin

May 29, 2012 - We continue our look at possible draft targets this week with a shooting guard. Over the last month we've looked at Tyler Zeller, Moe Harkless, Perry Jones III, Meyers Leonard, and Arnett Moultrie; today it's Terrence Ross from Washington.

As I discussed in the Moe Harkless piece, a wing player isn't their biggest need, that's still a center, but given the on-going situation with Kevin Martin, and Chandler Parsons limited offensive game; a scoring 2-guard is vital and should be addressed with one of their two 1st round picks. In Terrence Ross the Rockets will get a solid scorer that scouts say is a solid ball-handler, has good court vision, has range out to the 3-point line, and the athleticism to get to the rim and finish with authority. His downsides on offense are reported to be at times erratic passing, lack of a quick first-step, and scouts claim he sometimes gets lost in the flow during the game. During his sophomore year at Washington, Ross averaged 16.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, shot 45% from the field, and averaged 2 made 3-pointers per game.

On defense, Ross has very good length, is adept at playing the passing lanes, and even blocks a few shots. During his sophomore season at Washington, Ross averaged 1 steal and 1 block per game. If paired next to Chandler Parsons, the duo would make a very solid defensive pair on the perimeter. One thing he could improve on, he only weighs 195 pounds and should bulk up to guard some of the bigger 2's and 3's in the NBA.

If selected by the Rockets, I believe Ross would probably start the season coming off the bench as a 6th-man unless Kevin Martin is moved with a trade. According to the scouting report Ross has the game of a 2-way guard; he can get to the rim, knock down shots from the perimeter, and defend his position better than the Rockets current shooting guards. He'll need some time to develop but has big upside and should become a starter by year two at the latest.

NBAdraft.net has Ross going at 16th overall to the Rockets, HoopsHype at 16th overall to the Rockets, Hoopsworld at 18th overall, CBS at 18th overall, and DraftExpress.com at 16th overall to the Rockets.
