NBA: Houston Rockets release Luis Scola - San Jose Mercury News

The Houston Rockets waived forward Luis Scola on Friday, clearing more salary space with a major move in mind.

The one-time use of their amnesty clause allows the Rockets to release Scola without his remaining contract counting against their salary cap or luxury tax. Scola is due to make about $21 million over the next three seasons.

A fan favorite in Houston, the 6-foot-9 Scola averaged 14.5 points and 7.7 rebounds in five seasons with the Rockets.

The Rockets have torn apart their 2011-12 roster as they reportedly push Orlando to send them All-Star center Dwight Howard. Cutting Scola would allow Houston to absorb multiple undesirable contracts from Orlando in a potential deal.

  • New York Knicks guard Jeremy Lin, a restricted free agent, signed a three-year, $25.1-million offer sheet with the Rockets, a league source said.

The Knicks have three days to match the offer once they receive it, and they have said they will. But the Rockets heavily backloaded the third year to make it less appealing to match.

Lin will get $5 million in the first year, $5.2 million in the second year and $14.9 million in the final year, the source said.

Mavericks: Dallas won the bidding to obtain two-time All-Star forward Elton Brand off waivers.

Brand was available after the Philadelphia 76ers used their amnesty provision to release him and not have the $18.1 million he is owed in the

final season of his five-year deal count against their salary cap or luxury tax.

The winning bid wasn't revealed by the Mavericks. ESPN, citing anonymous sources, reported it was $2.1 million.

Dallas also completed a one-year deal with 7-foot center Chris Kaman.

76ers: Power forward Kwame Brown has agreed to a $6 million, two-year contract to join Philadelphia.

Brown played in only nine games with the Warriors last season and averaged 6.3 points and 6.3 rebounds in 20.8 minutes before needing season-ending surgery on his chest muscle.

Pacers: Indiana has re-signed free agents Roy Hibbert and George Hill, two key members of its rebuilding project.

The Pacers also said they have signed free-agent guard D.J. Augustin.

Timberwolves: Minnesota traded center Brad Miller and two second-round picks to New Orleans and waived forward Martell Webster, all in an effort to clear enough salary-cap room to sign Portland forward Nicolas Batum.

The Timberwolves plan to present the restricted free agent a four-year, $46.5 million offer sheet with incentives that could push the deal past $50 million.

Portland general manager Neil Olshey has said the team will match any offer for Batum.

Clippers: Five-time All-Star point guard Chauncey Billups, an unrestricted free agent, signed a deal to remain with Los Angeles.

Trail Blazers: Portland re-signed free-agent power forward J.J. Hickson to a one-year deal and signed Oakland's Damian Lillard, a point guard taken with the No. 6 overall pick in June.

Spurs: Former Saint Mary's guard Patty Mills has signed a deal to remain with San Antonio. The terms were not revealed.
