ESPN.com and the TrueHoop Network are ranking every NBA player â" and counting them down on Twitter (@NBAonESPN), from number 500 to number 1. As the rankings are announced, you can also find them on ESPN.com. ESPN asked 104 experts to rate each player on a 0-10 scale.
The Houston Rockets have multiple swingmen on their roster. Unfortunately for Gary Forbes, he looks to be behind all of them. The Rockets have Jeremy Lamb, Kevin Martin, Carlos Delfino, Chandler Parsons, Marcus Morris, Terrence Jones, Royce White, Shaun Livingston, Jeremy Lin and Toney Douglas who are all in front of him. Yes, I named the point guards as well because Forbes has the ability to run the point if needed.
Forbes is the type of player that can play three different positions. He can shoot, pass, defend or anything else you need him to do. The only problem is, heâs just been average at everything. Last season for the Toronto Raptors, Forbes averaged 6.6 points, 2 rebounds and 1 assists in 14 minutes a game. He played in 48 of the possible 62 games in the lockout shortened season. He shot just 41% from the field, 34% from downtown and 72% from the line.
As you can see, those numbers donât really jump out at you. Heâs 27 years old, but has only been in the NBA for two seasons. If Forbes can find the right situation with the right team I think he can become an impact player off the bench. Iâm just not sure if that team is going to be the Houston Rockets. He works hard and gives it his all while heâs in the game.
Gary has already appeared in a Rockets game over the offseason in the NBA Summer League. He only played in one game, but did make a decent impression. He scored 9 points on 3-8 shooting, shot 3-4 from the line, grabbed 5 rebounds, dished out 2 assists and had 1 takeaway.
To be quite honest with you I donât see a future for Forbes in Houston. Heâs buried beneath a pile of younger athletes who can do the same things he does and maybe even better. The Rockets are in a rebuilding stage and will most likely want to give the kids first dibs at playing time. If Forbes wants to crack the rotation he will need to make quite the impression in training camp and in the preseason. If not, he will possibly be looking for a new home sooner rather than later.
