AFC South favorite Houston will test its mettle against division rival Jacksonville this afternoon when the two squads lock horns at EverBank Field (1:00pm ET start time, CBS). Houston opened the season with an easy game, by NFL standards anyway, as it hosted the Miami Dolphins at Reliant Stadium. The Texans, playing as -13 against the spread home favorite, drilled Ryan Tannehill and company 30-10.
Houston’s offense finished the game with a modest 337 total yards as it had difficulty moving the ball on the ground. The Texans totaled 83 yards on 35 carries for an ugly 2.4 yards per carry average. Seventy-nine of those yards came from Arian Foster, who also scored two of the team’s four touchdowns.
Wade Phillips’ defense embarrassed the Dolphins rookie led offense as Miami converted just 2-of-10 on third down, went 0-for-3 in the red zone, and turned the ball over four times.
Jacksonville quarterback Blaine Gabbert knows well what the Texans are capable of on defense as he struggled to stay on his feet in two meetings with the club last season. The Jaguars, who fought hard in opening day overtime loss at Minnesota, suffered 24-14 and 20-13 setbacks to their AFC South rival in 2011. Gabbert was sacked eight times and hit 18 others in the two losses.
