The Texas A&M men's basketball team is in danger of missing NCAA Tournament for first time since 2005.
Jan 24, 2012 - Not many teams can say they have made the NCAA Tournament each of the last six seasons. The Texas A&M Aggies are one of those teams. The Aggies (11-8, 2-5 Big 12) are in serious danger of missing the "Big Dance" for the first time since 2005 and instead head to the less then exciting and irrelevant NIT. After a scorching hot 8-1 start it looked like the Aggies would make it seven straight NCAA Tournament appearances. Not so fast my friend, the Aggies have hit rock bottom and have hit it fast, losing 7 of it's last 10 games to fall to eighth place in a deep Big !2 conference that features Top 10 teams #5 Kansas, #2 Missouri and #7 Baylor.
Can the Aggies bounce back?
Texas A&M's best win might be before Thanksgiving when they beat a below average St. John's team 58-57 on Nov.18. The Red Storm are 8-11 this season and 13th in the Big East. The other Aggies wins are nothing to cheer about in Liberty, Southern, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Alcorn State, Stephen F. Austin, Louisiana Monroe, Arkansas Tech, Texas Tech (7-11, 0-6 Big 12) and Oklahoma (12-7, 2-5 Big 12). These 11 wins are less then impressive, Arkansas Tech?? Really??
The Aggies are led by Elston Turner (14.3 PPG) and Khris Middleton (12.4 PPG), but it hasn't been easy in Billy Kennedy's first season as Head Coach in College Station. Kennedy came to the Aggies from Murray State where he coached from 2006-2011. Murray State sits at #11 in the AP Top 25 at 20-0 on the season and is the only unbeaten team left in the NCAA. Kennedy has to be pleased with the success of the Racers of Murray State, but wishes it translated with the struggling Aggies.
Texas A&M only scores 62.3 points per game on the season, which is good for 290th in the NCAA. The Aggies have scored 80 or more points in only three games this season.
11 games are left on the schedule, but a tough schedule it is with Baylor, Missouri, Kansas and #24 Kansas State (twice) still to play. I project a 3-8 disappointing finish for the Aggies and a final record of 14-16 heading into the Big 12 Tournament.
