Huzzah! Reliant Stadium Turf Will Be Okay

The mini-debacle over the Reliant Stadium field seems to be put to bed for Saturday's playoff game against the Cincinnati Bengals. The field will be almost entirely made up of new trays so it shouldn't show any of the wear from last week's bowl game and season finale against the Titans.

What's more, we get some more information on the turf itself. The high points?

  • Each tray weighs 3,500 pounds. I always thought they were little, but apparently that's not the case.
  • Reliant Park is considering getting an artificial turf field to use in non-Texans events. That's in an attempt to make a bid for the UIL football championship games, especially after JerryWorld seems fond of running over coaches with unmanned carts.
  • Reliant has enough turf for two fields and change, meaning that any wear won't compound over the season.
  • Reliant got around the drought by continuing to water the field daily to keep the grass ready to play, but got around Houston's water policies in other ways...like low flow toilets or not allowing employees to drink water or some such anonymous policies.
