HOUSTONâ"The Astros agreed to terms on a one-year contract with free agent catcher Chris Snyder, general manager Jeff Luhnow announced Friday.
The deal also includes a mutual option for 2013. Additional terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Snyder, 30, hit .271 with three home runs and 17 RBIs in 34 games for the Pirates last season before lower-back surgery ended his season.
Snyder, who attended Spring Woods High School, collected 48 RBI and hit 15 home runs in 2010, which ranked fourth among NL catchers that season.
Snyderâs .998 career fielding percent is tops all-time in Major League history among catchers with 600 or more games. His 240-game errorless streak from August of 2007 to June of 2010 is the third longest by a catcher in Major League history.
After graduating from Spring Woods, Snyder played college ball at the University of Houston.
Snyder played for Arizona from 2004 until joining the Pirates in 2010. He has 70 homers, 273 RBIs and a .231 average in his career.
