Houston Astros kick off 50th season - KPRC Houston

Fans pack into MMP for Astros season opener

HOUSTON -

The boys of summer are back! The Houston Astros kicked off their 50th season Friday.

They'll be taking on the Colorado Rockies at home for three straight days.

The first pitch for the sold-out game wasn't until 6:05 p.m., but the celebration began hours earlier. There was a street fest and pep rally outside Minute Maid Park. There was another pep rally inside the park after the gates opened.

The pregame ceremony had a military flyover, the Budweiser Clydesdales performed and Clay Walker sang the national anthem. There was also be a ceremony to honor the team's legendary players.

The team has a new owner, Jim Crane, and with that comes new policies and ticket prices.

Many families couldn't make it out to Minute Maid Park in years past because of the cost of admission. The team has rolled back prices in several sections. Seats in the Field Box II level were $41 last season, but they are $29 now. If you want the bargain seats, those are in the Outfield Deck, where it costs $5 for adults and only $1 for children.

You may want to buy some peanuts and Cracker Jack, but you can actually bring that with you and save a few bucks.

"I think it's a nice fan gesture, particularly if you're a family with a bunch of kids," fan Shirley Koss said.

The team is allowing fans to bring their own food and water to the games. Food must be in a small, clear plastic bag and water must be in a sealed 1-liter or smaller plastic bottle. If you want a soft drink or beer, you're going to have to buy that at the park.

After the Rockies leave town, the Astros won't get a rest. The Atlanta Braves will be in town for three games beginning Monday.
