The Houston Rockets will have an interesting series of decisions to make in the 2012 NBA Draft, as they could either play it safe with picks No. 14 and No. 16 or go for broke in an attempt to break themselves out of the mediocrity treadmill they've been on since Yao Ming's retirement.
In his latest mock draft for SI.com, Sam Amick has them going with Option B and taking two of the highest upsides available in Baylor F Perry Jones III and Washington SG Terrence Ross:
The Rockets' front office is as calculated as they come. It has a habit of acquiring assets -- otherwise known as players -- that might not fit perfectly now but could come in handy later. But Jones, a top-10-worthy talent who has faced questions about his intensity level and inconsistent play, is both a good fit and a good asset (should the Rockets decide to trade him) if he falls this far. Though he's being billed as a small forward by his representatives, most teams see him as a power forward. He could play behind veteran forward Luis Scola while starting the process that he promises will take place: proving his critics wrong.
Ross and Jones both have lottery talent, but neither player was put in the best position to succeed by his college team and both could end up well outperforming their draft slot if they fall all the way to the Rockets.
