Houston Texans: Why Team Will Be Just Fine Without Mario Williams - Bleacher Report

With Mario Williams departing Houston for Buffalo, the Texans will be without one of the best defensive players in the game for the 2012 season, but will they be able to recover from such a big loss?

The answer is yes. The Texans will be just fine without Mario Williams.

While Mario Williams played great in the 3-4 defense under defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, he only managed to play for five weeks before getting injured. With Williams out, the Texans defense did not miss a beat, excelling without him and became the second best defense in the league, only behind the Pittsburgh Steelers.

With one of the best rushers in the game out for the season, the defense still excelled, and that's one of the key signs why they will be just fine without him in 2012. The Texans could've easily become just like the Indianapolis Colts. Without their best player on offense, quarterback Peyton Manning, their offense struggled and became one of the worst in the league.

While Williams has become a big name in the league, the Texans will be just fine at the defensive end position after drafting Whitney Mercilus from Illinois with their first pick in this year's draft. Wade Phillips, a defensive guru, doesn't get star players, but players that can excel in his defensive scheme. You know Mercilus was picked because he can fill that void Mario Williams left.

The Houston Texans must add players to help them become a more legitimate threat, but the defensive end position is not a concern. With Mercilus, the Texans are not concerned with the departure of Mario Williams.
