HOUSTON - Houston Rockets rookie forward Marcus Morris, the club's 2011 first-round pick, suffered a badly sprained left ankle according to his agent during the opening minutes of an NBA Development League game Thursday and did not return.
Morris and the Rio Grande Valley Vipers were playing the in the D-League's Showcase in Reno, Nevada.
His agent, Tony Dutt, was sitting with Rockets general manager Daryl Morey when the injury occurred.
"The consensus of what I was told is it's just a bad sprain," Dutt said in an interview with FOX 26 Sports.
"Literally it was the first shot of the game. He went up and when he came down the guy didn't give him any space to land, so he landed on the guy's ankle which turned his over."
Dutt said Morris was examined in Reno and will have an MRI in Houston.
"It was swollen obviously, but he was putting some pressure on it later in the night and they have one of those stimulating machines on it," Dutt said. "He should be fine.
"He's a hard-nosed kid. So when he went down and didn't get right up, we both knew it was more serious than what we thought."
Dutt said it is not clear how long Morris will be out.
"Daryl Morey mentioned a couple of weeks, maybe," Dutt said. "People heal different.
"So Hopefully with him it'll be a quicker process."
In a text message to FOX 26 Sports Morey confirmed that Morris turned his left ankle, but did not know the severity of the injury.
In three games Morris is tearing up the D-League.
He leads the league in scoring (29.7) and is fourth in rebounding (12.3).
