Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips will interview with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for their open head coach position, the Houston Chronicle reported on Sunday.
According to the Chronicle’s John McClain, the Texans gave the Buccaneers permission to interview Phillips, likely on Friday.
Houston’s defense has made a dramatic turnaround from 2010 in Phillips’ first season, ranking second in yards allowed per game.
When asked earlier this week, linebacker Brian Cushing said Phillips’ importance to the team can’t be overstated.
“He’s been huge,†Cushing said. “For what he’s done in turning this defense around has been unbelievable. So much credit goes to him, from scheme, to coaches he’s brought to just the personality of the team.â€
The Texans, who beat Cincinnati 31-10 in the franchise’s first-ever playoff game, will play the Baltimore Ravens in a divisional round game on Sunday at 12 p.m.
