HOUSTON - University of Houston head football coach Tony Levine has hired Mike Nesbitt from Stephen F. Austin as the Cougars new offensive coordinator.

Formerly the offensive coordinator at West Texas A&M, Nesbitt runs a similiar offense to the one used by UH, which is the air raid.

Nesbitt, a former NFL punter for the New Orleans Saints and Minnesota Vikings, directed the Stephen F. Austin offense to Top 15 national rankings in passing offense (No. 6 â€" 318.8), scoring offense (No. 11 - 35.7) and total offense (No. 11 â€" 439.4).

Former Cougars offensive coordinators Kliff Kingsbury, now the offensive coordinator at Texas A&M and Dana Holgorsen, now the head coach at West Virginia, initially joined the Houston staff without having ever called a play.

So Nesbitt will be the most experienced offensive coordinator at the University of Houston in the past few years.

Levine has also hired Jamie Christian as the Cougars' special teams coordinator and inside receivers coach.

Christian comes from Arizona State where he held a similiar title. In 2010, he directed the ASU kickoff return unit to a No. 2 ranking nationally.

Meanwhile, former UH offensive coordinator Jason Phillips has been hired by SMU as one of head coach June Jones' assistant coaches.
