I don't know if Case Keenum will ever be a good NFL quarterback, win himself a starting job or even last on a team for a full season.
But I do know he couldn't have found himself in a better position than landing with the Houston Texans.
The hometown connection is obvious, as Keenum is from Texas and played his college ball at the University of Houston. Surely, that factored into his decision to sign with the Texans as an undrafted free agent.
The Texans are also an excellent fit from a football standpoint for the young quarterback. He comes into a winning environment on a team that looks like a contender in the AFC for the next few years.
Keenum can sit back, hit the playbook and absorb along the way.
But Matt Schaub isn't Aaron Rodgers either, and in a few years he may be vulnerable to losing his job. He's already 30 and he's been injury prone throughout his career.
Since becoming the starter in Houston, he's missed 16 games in five seasons, including the postseason last year. If Keenum can move ahead of T.J. Yates and become the backup in the next year or so, there remains a very solid chance he'll wind up the starter.
Case Keenum will start for the Houston Texans someday.

It's the perfect scenario: learn from the bench, but do so knowing there is a realistic chance you'll see the field in three or four years.
Of course, there is a reason Keenum went undraftedâ"he's got a lot of work to do to prove to Gary Kubiak and the Texans that he is worthy of playing quarterback at this level. All of his gaudy college numbers don't mean anything now.
But he's certainly in a good situation if he can make believers of them all.
