Quarterback injuries have sunk the Houston Texans over the last few years. Matt Schaub is no guarantee to stay healthy and the team has a knack for finding serviceable backups. Would they consider bringing in Donovan McNabb at the right price?
Failures with Minnesota Vikings and Washington Redskins hurt McNabb stock
One would think six Pro Bowls, five NFC championships and one Super Bowl appearance would earn a player the benefit of the doubt. Sadly age and lack of recent success tend to trump those accomplishments in the modern NFL. Donovan McNabb went on record about Tim Tebow and the future success of Robert Griffin III. His most important statement though came when he let the league know he had zero plans to retire. He believes he has unfinished business in his career and is open to any team willing to take a chance on him. If it were that simple he would have had offers already. Instead teams haven't forgotten his disastrous stays with the Minnesota Vikings and Washington Redskins. Those failures have made quarterback needy teams wary of signing the veteran passer no matter how much he assures them he can still play. However, training camp and the preseason aren't too far away. Injuries and shifting rosters might very well open a spot for him. Then again at least one team could use depth at backup.
Matt Schaub injury history and overworked Arian Foster a bad recipe
The Houston Texans won a playoff game last year with their third string quarterback. It makes fans wonder what could have happened if starter Matt Schaub had stayed healthy or even backup Matt Leinart. Now Schaub is back but the questions around the Texans quarterbacks haven't stopped. Leinart left to join the Oakland Raiders and the only moves at quarterback Houston has made so far is adding rookie free agent Case Keenum behind former third stringer T.J. Yates. The lack of depth and lack of experience behind Schaub is telling and could put even more pressure on workhorse running back Arian Foster should the injury problems return. Houston has a history of giving down-and-out quarterbacks a new home. Leinart and former starter Jake Delhomme were both castoffs from other teams. Though McNabb is nowhere near his best playing days, the Texans talent on offense could still benefit from his playoff experience.
Gambles happen every day in the NFL. Sometimes it's by choice, others not so much. The Houston Texans are gambling that Matt Schaub can stay healthy in 2012 and T.J. Yates will become a solid backup. For all his problems with the Minnesota Vikings and Washington Redskins, Donovan McNabb would offer nice insurance in the worst case.
