If you haven’t heard by now the Rockets will not be bringing back Camby. Yesterday he met with the Knicks, who he played for from 1998-2002. It has been reported that the Knicks and Brooklyn Nets are the front-runners to land the veteran big man. The only way these teams will be able to get Camby is through a sign-and-trade which has to be done before July 11th when Camby will become and unrestricted free agent.
I personally think the Knicks would be a great fir for Marcus. Outside of Tyson Chandler and Amare Stoudemire the Knicks don’t have a legitimate role playing big man. Camby could fill that role and then some. When Camby got traded to Houston from Portland he took the starting spot away from Samuel Dalembert and flourished. He started 13 of the 19 games he played for Houston, averaging 7 points, 9.2 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.5 blocks in 24 minutes a game. Camby is 38 years old and plans to play for three more seasons. His best days are behind him, but he can definitely be an above average backup center for any team in the league.
He only played 19 games for the Rockets, but it will be hard to see him go. He was a great leader and defender in Houston and his presence will be greatly missed. Whoever gets him will get a true leader and great guy on and off the court.
The Rockets are in a rebuilding stage and have no need for a 16-year veteran. With Asik most likely on his way and Motiejunas having the height to play center, but not the strength, it will very interesting to see how the Rockets will deal with losing another guy who brings lots of size. You can’t teach height, and height is one thing the Rockets lack.
