Both teams were entering their first ever FCS championship game, but it was the North Dakota State Bison who came out victorious as they shutdown the Sam Houston State offense to win 17-6. This loss was the first of the season for Sam Houston State and their offense was held to a season low 201 total yards which is 225 yards under their season average of 426 per game.
Sam Houston State was also held out of the endzone for the first time all year and settled for a pair of field goals at the end of the first half. The key play in the second half was when North Dakota State's Travis Becked picked off Brian Bell and returned the ball 63 yards to the Sam Houston State 1-yard line. North Dakota State then punched in by quarterback Brock Jensen to put North Dakota State up for good at 10-6.
North Dakota State would score an insurance touchdown in the fourth quarter on another Jensen 1-yard touchdown run to win 17-6.
