Get ready, folks. The MLB draft season is almost ready to kick into gear as colleges and high schools are about to start playing pitch and catch. That means the Astros will be swirling in every conversation as to what they will do at the top of the draft.
That's because there has yet to be a consensus candidate at No. 1 overall in this draft class. Early on, people seem to like Stanford right-hander Mark Appel, but the high school arms in this class are just as intriguing.
One of those is young righty Lucas Giolito, who has the power fastball to be a No. 1 starter down the road. Our favorite scouting site, Baseball Prospect Report, has an updated story on Giolito, talking about his all-important secondary stuff.
Now, it's not your ordinary scouting report, but that's what you should expect from John Klima, who has a keen mind for both scouting and the written word. It's a good read, but be sure to take away his confidence that the youngster can become a pitcher.
If that holds up and he stays healthy, Giolito has a chance to be at the top of this draft. Which would also be precent-setting, since no high school right-hander has ever been taken No. 1 overall. Your move, Jeff Luhnow...
