Stephanie Stradley does a great job of breaking down where the Houston Texans stand heading into NFL Draft season. Stradley mentions many times that she's not a "draftnik" but she does a great job of setting up Houston's situation in the drafts.
The thing I like about this so much is it's exactly what a lot of mock drafters do not do. That's why you've seen so many early links to Houston and Dontari Poe, the big nose tackle since Houston needs a nose tackle. Everyone knows that, right?
Except there is a lot of evidence that Wade Phillips doesn't need a big nose in his scheme. So, move on to option No. 2, which is a receiver.
That seems logical, but it's way too early to tell which receivers are available at the end of the first round. Mock drafts are hard, there's no denying that. But, unless someone does in-depth research on each team's needs and draft tendencies, they are shots in the dark.
At this point, if I had to guess, I bet Houston goes defense in the first round, or maybe a lineman who falls that far. Someone like Stanford guard David DeCastro, though even then it's hard to know if he'll fit in Houston's system.
They do need a receiver, but with what the Texans value, they could pick up someone like A&M's Jeff Fuller in the second or third round and get someone who's football smart and knows how to block downfield for less than a Kendall Wright in the first round.
Of course, before the Senior Bowl or the Scouting Combine, we are a long way from seeing how players will shake out. What Stradley did is a great first step at this time of year.
