Houston Texans face tough but fair choice of giving QB Matt Schaub extension â€" NFL News

Houston Texans’ quarterback, Matt Schaub, 31, is fast catching up on his final years in the National Football League (NFL) and the veteran’s age will be the key consideration for the team to mull landing him an extension to his previous six-year deal, which is about a year away from expiry.

Matt is keen on getting a contract from the management but the matter is yet down to his desire only. The Texans have not even hinted at their willingness to negotiate and agree fresh terms with the QB, even though the player and his agent are optimistic about it.

The player is returning from a Lisfranc surgery to join the squad at training camp later this month, most probably. He has already started doing some light workout to speed up his rehab.

Away from the injury, he has spoken of getting his deal extended but said the matter has never come into discussions between the management and his agent.

Although the age will matter the most in the team’s consideration of giving a new contract to the player, almost all commentators agree the move will make sense.

They believe the player has great potential and should be able to play football without any major impact on his form and performance for three to four more years, at least.

Only other reason for the team to deny Schaub a contract extension can be that they decide to make their offence dependent upon the second-year quarterback, T.J. Yates.

Yates impressed the team during his rookie year, in fact he led the team to the playoffs and American Football Conference (AFC) South division win in the 2011 season, for the first time in their franchise history.

The QB holds credentials and potential to perform remarkably well on the starting line and it is down to the Texans to decide if they will retain him as a starter and let Schaub go after his current deal expires.

With nothing said on any aspect of the possibility of Yates as permanent future leader, it looks most likely that the Texans will hammer out a deal for Schaub.
