Restaurants, Bars Brace for Texans

HOUSTON - Since 1965, a bar, simply named Grif's, has stood tucked away in a quiet Montrose neighborhood.

"That's what we claim it is," said current owner, Debra Catlett. "The oldest sports bar in Texas, and nobody’s been able to show us any different."

Seated right next to her on the barstools was the man who opened Grif's all those years ago.

Griff Griffin opened this place long before the Texans ever existed, when the Oilers ruled this city.

"Houston deserves this," Griffin said. "Not only the Texans fans, but for all the years that the people you know, we haven’t had anything like this since 'love ya blue.' This whole city came alive."

The spark is back.

Restaurants and bars across the city are already advertising watch parties.

But only one spot, the Boneyard Dog Park and Drinkery, will, "allow dogs inside, as long as they're on their leash, also on the patio," said owner Justin Bardwell. "Uhmm, no kids. We don't serve food, but we have food trucks that come out every weekend."

If food is your thing, you may want to check out the brand new Houston Texans Grille.

Doors open at 8 a.m., and they do not take reservations.

"I expect people to sleep overnight," said manager Shad Miller. "I expect to walk in at 6 a.m. Sunday morning and see people already here. We've had it before where we couldn’t even turn on the escalator because they were already lined up down the street."
Don't worry about long waits for drinks, though Miller says the Grille didn’t expect a large crowd when the Texans played the Colts on a Thursday night.

The staff ran behind but learned a lesson one the folks over at the oldest sports bar in the state learned many years ago.
"It gets crazy in here," said Grif's co-owner Debra Catlett. "We have some really rabid, regular fans."
