I’ve been mocking a wide receiver to the Houston Texans for a long time now, but there’s a new receiver threat who plays a different position that is emerging as a potential target for Matt Schaub and the crew. That receiver target is Stanford’s Coby Fleener, according to Tony Pauline of SI.com and TFY Draft Insider:
“We have heard from several sources that the Houston Texans are seriously considering using their first round pick, number 26, on tight end Coby Fleener of Stanford,†Pauline writes. “This makes a lot of sense for a number or reasons. It gives the Texans a weapon at tight end, which is not presently on the roster, at least to the extent offered by Fleener. And while most have pegged the team to take a receiver in round one, the franchise can come away with a good wide out later in the draft.â€
This could be a ploy to get someone in front of Houston to take Fleener, and to let someone else fall to them at pick number 26. Still, it would be really intriguing to see Fleener go to Houston, where Owen Daniels has been unable to stay healthy and there are still question marks about James Casey. I think Casey and Daniels are a solid 1-2 punch at the position as it stands, but adding Fleener could be a huge move for Houston.
It’s really well-documented that the former standout from Stanford is not a great blocker, maybe not even a good one, but that has never stopped tight ends from flourishing in this type of offense. The Texans employ a very similar offense to that the Denver Broncos used to use when Tony Scheffler was putting up big numbers.
