I think the best part of the NFL offseason is all the wacky quotes you get from players, coaches, and ownership. This week we were blessed with a couple of gems. First, Jerry Jones told fans to âcome watch [the Dallas Cowboys] kick the [New York Giants'] asses,â then Wade Phillips heaped some heavy praise on Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt.
Phillips believes Watt is headed for Canton and the NFL Hall of Fame after seeing him for just one short year.
â(Wattâs) going to be a bustâ"not a first-round bust but a bust in the Hall of Fame,âPhillips said Monday. âThe only players Iâve seen that can do what he can do with his intensity can be found in Canton.â
Watt had a dominant season as a 3-4 defensive end for Phillips, who was in his first year as the Texansâ defensive coordinator. Watt finished with 56 tackles and 5.5 sacks, a solid number from a position who is mostly used for stopping the run.
We saw flashes of brilliance from Watt in 2011, and he could be poised for a breakout 2012 campaign. With DeMeco Ryans and Mario Williams gone, Watt could actually be the most talented player on that defense.
âIâve seen a lot of guys, and I compare him to Howie [Long] in that he has the same quickness to beat [offensive] linemen off the ball. Heâs a smart guy who gets it,â Phillips added.
That is some pretty high praise from one of the best defensive minds in football. Perhaps it will motivate Watt to make Phillips a prophet.
