This is a new experience for me. One of the Houston Astros newest front office additions follows me on Twitter.
On Tuesday, Mike Fast, formerly of Baseball Prospectus and one of the foremost authorities on Pitch F/X data, announced he's joining Houston GM Jeff Luhnow's front office. Fast has actually commented over at The Crawfish Boxes, correcting some of my Pitch F/X-related gaffes and has always been great on the subject.
The only problem, I guess, is the baseball community as a whole loses him as a resource for his great analysis. What he does as far as linear weights, heat maps and looking at different features of Pitch F/X are simply amazing. He's always been at the forefront of analysis with that data, writing one of the first explanations of what all the numbers mean for people wanting to dive into their own analysis.
I don't know how much more I can take this. The Astros just keep getting smarter and smarter. How can we be snarky internet writers if there's nothing to snark about? For the love of God, Luhnow, you're putting the entire Astros blogosphere out of business? Show some humanity!
