Team gets ready for Carolina on Saturday
Aug 7, 2012 - Texans players have been hitting other players in the same colored jersey for several months now going back to OTA's in May, so it comes as no surprise that they're looking forward to taking on different players on Saturday. No player loves training camp, especially the veterans, so after nearly two weeks of two-a-days they're eager to take on the Carolina Panthers. It's just a pre-season game and the starters will likely play at most two series so the end result doesn't matter much, but Carolina beat them at Reliant last year and embarrassed the defense so the players want to look good on Saturday and maybe pick off Cam Newton in the process.
Kubiak said today (Tuesday) that he won't have the game plan ready in full for Carolina until probably Thursday, but expect this to be a big game for the rookie wide receivers and offensive lineman. The starters will play quite a bit more in the second and third games and the coaches will likely have their minds made up by the fourth game, so Saturday's game against Carolina will be a big opportunity for the rookies to show what they can do. The Texans have a few injury issues and are thin at receiver and along the offensive line, so Kubiak wants to see the young players step it up and play like veterans very quickly. For the first time that I can remember there aren't really any position battles for starting jobs (I don't buy into the kicker debate) but this Saturday against Carolina will be very important in determining how much playing time young guys like Keshawn Martin, DeVier Posey, Brandon Harris, and Whitney Mercilus receive during the season.
