The Houston Texans lost two key cogs of their offensive line to free agency in the offseason, and the Houston Chronicle's John McClain profiled the likely candidates to replace Eric Winston (right tackle) Mike Brisiel (right guard).
With four preseason games, expect a hefty amount of shuffling as those two roles get filled. per McClain, the current frontrunners are veterans Rashad Butler (tackle) and Antoine Caldwell (guard), but look for second-year tackle Derek Newton and guard Brandon Brooks to get a look, too:
When asked about the combination of Butler and Caldwell after the morning practice, coach Gary Kubiak said, "Theyâre doing a good job. Theyâre being pushed really hard. Brooks and Smith are pushing Caldwell. Newtonâs pushing the heck out of Butler. Itâs going to be a tough call. I couldnât make that call today."
"Theyâre all holding their own," Kubiak said. "Weâll see how they handle the bright lights when we start playing. Hopefully, theyâre all healthy. Itâs a very, very tough decision, and itâs good for our team."
If Butler and Caldwell win the jobs and work well in 2012, the Texans could have the same problem all over again, as both are on the last year of their respective contracts.
